Help SCAPE Public Art Bring 'Fanfare' home to Christchurch

Fanfare, by Neil Dawson, is a visionary and extraordinary legacy sculpture with 360 separate “pinwheels” that spin freely in the wind and are spread over a massive 20 metre diameter. SCAPE Public Art is currently fundraising so that this extraordinary 24 metre tall sculpture can be installed permanently beside the Northern Motorway in Christchurch. Once installed, Fanfare will boast New Zealand’s largest public sculpture.

I was recently approached by Deborah McCormick, the Director of SCAPE Public Art, and was delighted to discuss their goals to install this truly spectacular sculpture in Christchurch.

On 1 September 2014, SCAPE Public Art will launch a Public Appeal Campaign through PledgeMe.co.nz to $50,000 of the remaining funds needed to install Fanfare. “This is an opportunity for the community to get involved, to get excited about Fanfare and to become an integral part of bringing Fanfare home to Christchurch for all to enjoy” Deborah told me.

I think this is a rare opportunity for the people of Christchurch to make their mark on the world and to come together as a community to elevate Canterbury onto the global arts stage. It is not often that we get invited to be a part of something that is going to become an iconic link between Christchurch and Canterbury. Not to mention, it is going to look impressive when it is all lit up at night with a variable colour changing system!

The Bring Fanfare Home Pledge Me Campaign will run for a period of 6 weeks starting on 1 September with rewards for those who donate any amount between $10 and $5,000.

So, come on Christchurch, let’s bring Fanfare home!

Two Big Election Names – Economically Speaking

Food for Thought: The Cuningham Taylor Business Lunch on Thursday 4 September, is a unique opportunity for the Canterbury business community to hear the latest views and news on the economy.

The Hon. Bill English, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance will be joined as speaker by the Hon. David Parker, Labours finance Spokesperson and they will offer their insight and opinion on the economic outlook and how it may or may not affect Canterbury business in the next year or two.

I am the MC for the lunch and getting these two speakers together is a real draw-card.

The added bonus for luncheon attendees is that you get to enjoy political insights straight from the coal face, which is particularly relevant with an election looming. This event is the annual fundraiser for Champion Canterbury Award winners The Family Help Trust, a not-for-profit that have been successfully reducing child abuse in the region for over 23 years.

The value that The Family Help Trust adds to a seriously disadvantaged section of our community is enormous, under recognised and worthy of all the support we can give it. Support of families who are struggling and have children in the first 5 years of life can make a permanent difference to both parents and children, enabling them to enjoy a better quality of life. Nominations for the CECC Board

Nominations for the  CECC Board are now being called for, with a closing date of Friday 15 August.

Every year half of our Board comes up for re-election, which means six spaces are available. This year we have at least two of the current Board are not standing so there are definitely spaces for “new  blood”.

It is a rewarding governance contribution to a successful long standing entity and in the past has provided opportunity to staircase into other governance roles.

We run a strong democratic process with our governance model and I really encourage CECC members who would like to be involved to contact me for further information or click here for detailed information related to the elections.
